Laboratory Technician
General Statement of Job
Under general supervision, assists in the operation of the water and wastewater laboratory according to South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) regulations. Performs a variety of work involving the chemical and biological analysis of potable water and wastewater. Reports to the Laboratory Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions
- Provides technical and administrative support to the Laboratory Supervisor in managing the day to day operations of the District’s water and wastewater laboratory in accordance with SCDHEC regulations.
- Performs daily routine analysis of reclaimed for bacteriological, pH, turbidity, chlorine and dissolved oxygen.
- Performs scheduled sample collection for water and wastewater operations.
- Performs tests in a timely manner and confirms the accuracy of results.
- Prepares samples and performs associated documentation for contract laboratories.
- Maintains bench sheets.
- Maintains adequate quality control and quality assurance program for all parameters.
- Prepares a variety of reports including biological reports as required by SCDHEC.
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs on lab equipment.
- Utilizes and maintains a variety of technically related equipment to perform required testing.
Additional Job Functions
Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess an Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or related field. A minimum of 1-year experience in laboratory operations. Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position will be considered. Must possess computer skills, instrumentation skills, and have the ability to read and write and perform basic statistical calculations. Must possess the ability to operate a variety of laboratory equipment and instruments used in operations. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including general office as well as lab equipment. Must be able to exert up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The employee stands, walks, bends at neck and waist, twists at neck and waist, uses repetitive hand movement, uses simple and power grasping with both hands, uses fine manipulation of both hands and fingers, and lifts and carries short distance with objects weighing up to 25 to 50 pounds. Frequently operates laboratory equipment requiring repetitive arm/hand movement and/or the coordinated movement of more than one limb simultaneous. Possess specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Exposure to potentially hazardous laboratory chemicals, solvents, microbiological pathogens, odors and fumes. Standing up to three or more hours a day while performing bench work or field work. Sits up to three hours a day while performing work at instrumentation interface and computer terminal.
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday. Must be able to work weekends and holidays as needed.
