DIRECTOR OF THE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATIONS

 

Marshall University seeks an outstanding and experienced leader to serve as the Director of the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications. The next Director will be an innovative, dynamic, and transformative leader who will be a change agent in bringing the school to the next level as it builds upon its past strengths and develops its vision for a future in support of its students and its region.

 

Marshall University’s W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) and has been since 1974. The school is dedicated to experiential learning, with students having the opportunity to work in a newsroom, a television studio, a radio station, and an agency.  The School offers three majors, each with areas of emphasis: Advertising/Public Relations, Journalism, and Media Production.  The school also houses the university’s Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lyceum, which honors the life and achievements of the Father of Black History and sponsors many of the university’s major programs during Black History Month.

 

The Director will be an established senior scholar with a successful record of teaching, research, service, administrative and financial leadership, and demonstrated potential for collaborative leadership and shared faculty governance. The Director will teach one course in the program per semester. The ideal candidate will be an advocate for the vital role of “story telling” in journalism and mass communications that involves sorting and understanding information, researching the facts, and seeking the truth.  The successful candidate will have experience cultivating and strengthening relationships with alumni; a track record of managing resources and budgetary control systems; an innovative approach to marketing, branding, and communications; effective team-building skills; a strong research background, including working with grants, centers, clusters, projects, and other research collaborations; and a laser focus on growing enrollments, retention, and student success through participating in campus-wide and college-level strategic enrollment management.

The university achieved Doctoral University, High Research Activity, R2 status in 2018 and offers more than 150 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs.
