Linux Systems Engineer

 

The Information Technology Department at James Madison University (JMU) is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the JMU team as a Linux Systems Engineer. The primary responsibilities for this position will be the administration of Linux servers and managing the enterprise SAN. Additional responsibilities include installing and configuring server hardware and operating systems, monitoring system performance, working with the enterprise backup system, and providing support to JMU IT customers.

 

The Linux Systems Engineer will be responsible for the following:

  • Installing and administering Linux server hardware and software in a physical and virtual environment
  • Administering enterprise storage systems: SAN and NFS
  • Installing and administering monitoring, patching, and logging systems
  • Monitoring performance and applying corrective measures
  • Configuring and monitoring Linux server backups using enterprise backup software
  • Maintaining security by managing compliance with a security baseline
  • Working with hardware and software support engineers to diagnose and correct problems
  • Responding to trouble tickets and work requests and participation in on-call rotation
  • Preparing documentation and reports for use within Information Technology
  • Automating routine or complex tasks with code (Ansible, Bash, Python)

 

The successful candidate is required to have:

  • Experience administering Linux servers
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking
  • Experience troubleshooting various systems in a complex environment
  • Experience with scripting in Ansible, Bash, or Python
  • Ability to work independently and to work closely with a small team

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience administering systems in an enterprise server environment (i.e systems for monitoring, patching, log management)
  • Experience with network storage systems (i.e. SAN, NFS, NAS)
  • Experience using windows operating systems and Microsoft O365
  • Experience using enterprise backup software in a Linux environment
  • Experience in an enterprise IT environment
