POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is currently seeking a Research Specialist I to join our team of professionals.

Duties Include:

  • Manages lab operations and budget for an assigned. Supervises and coordinates the experiments performed by research fellows, students, and laboratory technicians.
  • Operates and maintains various research instruments and equipment.
  • Provides assistance with manuscript preparation and grant submission processes under direction of the PI.
  • Coordinates the ordering of lab supplies and equipment, including restricted purchases that need EHS approval (controlled substances) and NIH reagents orders. Provides advice/consulting for laboratory space management and equipment purchases.
  • Coordinates repair of equipment and maintenance of contracts. Serves as lead for flow cytometry and cell-sorting instrumentation. Serves as lead for all imaging instrumentation, including, but not limited to, western blot, histology, in vivo imaging, confocal imaging.
  • Co-authors publications (as relevant) and may co-present with PI at meetings and/or conferences. Must be able to use reference manager software (e.g., Endnote), and provides support to all Sackstein lab personnel related to bibliographic construction in all lab publication formats.
  • Ensures compliance with protocol requirements, as well as local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Plans, directs, and conducts research experiments approved by the Principal Investigator (PI). Performs experiments using cell culture techniques, flow cytometry, western blot, ELISA, IHC, DNA and RNA analysis, animal (mouse) manipulation, and all other lab duties under direction of PI. Serves as Core Manager for flow cytometry and all cell- sorting instrumentation.
  • Serves as Laboratory Safety Manager. Monitors and enforces laboratory safety procedures.
  • Develops and implements strategies to ensure protocol compliance, exceptional source documentation, and timely and accurate reporting of data. Responsible for environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance records, including chemical inventory, controlled substances, storage, MSDS, training records (laboratory and IACUC), waste disposal management, lab inspections and renewal drug permits.
  • Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends, and implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques.
  • Communicates research results to Principal Investigator (PI) and other researchers. Prepares descriptions of all methods used in experimentation, including archiving such protocols in both hardcopy (lab protocol book) and digital formats. Responsible for presentation of all laboratory data in both written and figure/table formats.
  • Contributes to the development of reports and data summaries, data input and documentation of ongoing research and monitoring efforts. Provides support with database development, data collection and data input.
  • Performs essential duties in emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification from a department administrator.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate specialization and four (4) years of experience or Master's degree and two (2) years of experience.
