Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) is currently the fourth largest of North Carolina Community College System’s 58 institutions. Under the direct supervision and direction of the Technical Services Librarian and the Library Director, the Senior Library Technical Services Technician serves a variety of functions within the Technical Services Department. In addition to cataloging in OCLC’s WorldShare Management Services, the technician assists in performing all acquisition-related functions, including ordering, receiving, processing, and claiming materials. Materials include print, media, and electronic forms of information that support the research mission of the college, faculty, and staff. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as a willingness to work cooperatively.
- Cataloging
- Performs copy cataloging using the automated bibliographic database.
- Maintains catalog records.
- Participates in inventory, shelf-reading, and deselection of books and materials.
- Acquisitions
- Orders approved books, DVDs, and periodicals under the direction of the Technical Services Librarian.
- Verifies and receives material shipments.
- Processes new materials, and maintains materials already on the shelves.
- Routes books, periodicals, and other materials to various campus locations.
- Serials Management
- Manages periodical check-in, claims, shelving, shifting, and weeding.
- Maintains periodicals according to the Collection Development policy.
- General Tasks
- Repairs books, materials, and equipment.
- Creates informative reports.
- Shelves library materials.
- Maintains adequate inventory of technical services supplies.
- Writes technical services procedures and keeps accurate records.
- Directs work-study students if assigned.
- Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.
- Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Frequent interruptions.

Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution.
Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution.
One-year experience cataloging.
- One-year experience working in a library with technical services, circulation, interlibrary loan, or public services.
- Experience using a library management system, such as OCLC-WMS.
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of copy cataloging for multiple formats of library materials.
- Ability to work collaboratively and productively with all level of staff.
- Requires attention to details.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing policies and procedures.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to quickly learn and operate Web-based applications and manual procedures.
- Ability to solve problems and carry out tasks with minimal supervision.
- Ability to organize and manage the workflow in a library support unit.
- Experience creating Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word documents.
- Participate in job-related workshops and trainings to enhance job performance.
- Attend departmental and college-wide meetings.
- May be required to travel to other campus locations.
- Neat, professional appearance and attire.
