Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in subject area, and/or teaching endorsement in respective area and one year successful teaching experience at middle school, high school or college level. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required, along with effective classroom management skills. Experience working with underrepresented youth preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply. By federal mandate, prior first-generation college students may be given priority if equal to other candidates.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The instructor is responsible for providing general academic enrichment in subject matter as well as facilitating grade-appropriate attention to assignments and preparation for school exams. Looking for competency in at least Biology and Chemistry, with preference given to solid background in physical science and physics.
Additional Comments Regarding Position:
The College of Charleston Upward Bound program, federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education, is looking for a highly-qualified Science instructor for our Academic Year Component (September through to mid-April 2021), with the potential to be renewed for summer, pending grant renewal.
There are four separate classes of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. Teacher work hours will be and select Saturdays from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (Monday-Thursday during Summer
Component); occasionally coming in a bit earlier or staying later as appropriate.
Instruction does not need to simply be lecture. Demonstrations, safe experiments, class discussions, projects and so forth are welcome. Innovation and engaged creativity are encouraged.
Instructor will be responsible for evaluating each students’ effort per week so taking classroom attendance and paying attention to individual performance is key.
As of this writing, instruction will be in person on College of Charleston campus. Depending on public health concerns, it may pivot to Zoom as well as use of Google Classroom. Candidate should be adept at both.
